Its All Connected

During the lab, I learned about the currents of the ocean and the effects of littering and how it can end up all across the globe! Winds blow the trash into bodies of water and the currents pull it to different spots where there is no more currents and the trash piles up. The water currents follow the wind patterns. Similar to the wind patterns and Coriolis effect, ocean currents in the southern hemisphere flow to the left and currents in the northern hemisphere flow to the right. Warm currents and cold currents also flow in patterns similar to the wind. The warm water flows away from the equator and then as it moves farther away, it cools and moves back towards the equator, and the cycle continues. In this lab, I studied the Hadley, Mass area. The main body of water in this area is the Connecticut river. The water in the river flows down from the Appalachian mountains. The water continues down the river into the Atlantic ocean. Winds blow out of this region South towards the southern part of the United States. It carries out the cold air back toward the equator where it will then warm again and flow back up. The waters from this region move cold water into the Atlantic ocean where it will then fl0ow down south toward the equator. Waste from this region ends up in a trash pit in the Atlantic ocean. The trash from this region can end up in other regions, just as the trash from other regions can end up in this region. This situation makes it necessary for there to be international trash laws. In order to protect our oceans and our planet, we should be using more biodegradable materials and reusable materials instead of just using throwaways, such as plastic.
